Huggies to Get More Expensive Next Year

A reader sent me this snippet of news:

DALLAS, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE: KMB) today announced that its consumer tissue and baby and child care businesses are notifying customers of plans to raise prices in the U.S. during the first quarter of 2008. The company said the increases are necessary to offset significant inflationary pressure from higher raw material and energy costs.

Prices for Cottonelle and Scott bathroom tissue, Viva and Scott paper towels, Huggies diapers, Pull-Ups training pants, Goodnites youth pants and Huggies Little Swimmers swimpants will increase between 4 and 7 percent effective February 3, 2008.

Darn! and that's the toilet paper I use, too! It will be interesting to see what happens to the Stockupportunity price for Huggies Supreme. It could increase from $7.99 to $8.30-$8.54 per jumbo, but KC's competition with Procter & Gamble (Pampers) is so fierce that I wouldn't be surprised if the lowest sale prices stay the same or if P&G announces something like this too. Another good reason to fall in love with store brands!

Guess I'll be stocking up using the rain checks I got from Target...that's too bad as much as these companies make, they still try and make more at the expense of the consumer.

They did this about 5 or so years ago and pampers raised there prices right along with them.

That means that now is the time to stock up on diapers when there are sales plus use plenty of coupons to lower the prices.

Dang it! I use Scott toilet paper and Viva paper towels. I guess I'll be stocking up.

"As much as these companies make"...

Anon: If the companies did not make money, then the products would not be there for you to buy. You'd be using cloth diapers and making your own.

I am surprised and pleased that they are announcing the price increase ahead of time, instead of just raising the price, the way most groceries get more expensive.

Good point, MBR...

I wonder what KC's motivation is in announcing this early. What do they stand to gain by doing so? Are they in a way inviting P&G to do the same so they're "not the only ones"? Or are they trying to avoid a bunch of consumer backlash?

What do you think?

They are upping the competition by announcing early. And probably announcing because of their stocks and such as well. I am not surprised, maybe this will put more pressure on the big wigs to find more eco friendly ways to produce and dispose of diapers (there is only one kind of diaper out there that is eco friendly--Julia Roberts uses them at 20 bucks a diaper!).

It is time to stock up, I guess! My baby is still in size 3, but that doesn't mean that I am not going to go out and start stocking up the 4's! It would be a little crazy of me to do 5's :) He is only 8 months old afterall!

I wouldn't be surprised if KC is announcing this future increase at this time to increase sales prior to the end of year. Let's give a warning that prices will go up so everyone goes out and buys large quantities before end of year. Anyone else think this is the idea?

My son is still in 3's at 13 months old, but I have already begun to stock up on some size 4's. I better keep on stocking up.

My hubby thinks I am crazy to stock up on diapers, but he doesn't understand that it cuts down the bills.

Looks like the per-diaper increase (at.20 per diaper) is one to two cents. 40-55 centss per jumbo at $7.99. My math says that's up to $50 per year.

Shoot! My 5 month old is in size 4's and will probably be in 5's shortly! Guess maybe I'll start "toilet teaching" at 9 months like some experts suggest! Gotta save somehow!

Looks like I'll really be switching to the Costco brand (which, IMO, are pretty much the same as the Huggies). Of course, I'll stock-up now when the opportunity presents itself, but after that the store brands will probably be getting my business.

You might not need those 5s so soon. My son was in 4s by 4 months, and I was also worried that he'd shoot up to 5s in no time. But he's 10 months now, and the 4s still fit. His tushie got big, early, but eventually his rate of growth slowed down...

Angie,

My son is so slender and long that I can't find pants that he can hold up. He is in 18 month clothes and stores like the Children's place or Carters or Old Navy only make adjustable pants in size 24 months and up. Any suggestions?

Joey's mom--

I know my friend had a problem like that with her oldest and after a long search and trying almost every type and fit of jean out there, she ended up just finding a tailor and getting the waist taken in. Good luck in your search!

Right now it is looking like only overall's this winter for my son because he is so tall, but not fat enough for the 18 month pants at 13 months old.
