Five Ways To Deal With the Diaper Price Hike

We knew it was coming. Now it's here. Last October diaper manufacturers Procter & Gamble (Pampers) and Kimberly-Clark (Huggies) announced that they'd be raising prices 3 to 12% in early 2008, citing higher materials and energy costs. Commodity prices may be up, but so are profits at both companies. Both P&G and K-C recently announced increased quarterly profits, with K-C reporting record sales and "double digit volume gains" on sales of Huggies diapers and wipes. Both companies have upped forecasted profits for 2008.

Last week we started seeing higher shelf prices on both Huggies and Pampers, and today we're seeing a "sale"price of $9.99 per jumbo that used to be $8.99. For size 3, that dollar increase amounts to an increase of just less than three cents per diaper--about 13%! Most families will need to add between $5 and $10 per month to their diaper budgets, or $60 to $100 for the year. Don't let that make you bitter, though! Here are five ways to beat higher diaper prices:

Try Harder. Don't ever pay more than you have to. Become shockingly efficient at calcluating per-diaper prices, and use manny and store coupons to get the per-diaper price down. When you find a geat deal, stock up more than you used to. Join a coupon trading group to make sure you always have the q's you need. Check the weekly Top Diaper Deals posts here at BC to make sure you know where to shop. When you buy Huggies save your receipts and send them in to Caregivers' Marketplace for a dollar back on each jumbo (it's open to everyone).

Save somewhere else. Cut out a latte a week. Eat out less. Share magazine subscriptions with a friend. Use you local library more. Pick up clothes and gear for free at Freepeats or for super cheap at your local thrift store. Hit the consignment sales instead of the mall. With some creative thinking, you should be able to come up with an extra $10 per month to cover the increased diaper costs.

Ask for diapers as baby shower and baby gifts. No, diapers aren't cute or fun, but there's something mighty satisfying about having a closet full of them. They make great birthday gifts for one-year-olds, too!

Go store brand. There's one out there that will work for you. Even if you've tried store brands and been disappointed, try them again. Babies who couldn't use them at one age can at another, as body shapes and elimination patterns change month to month. Target and WalMart, who carry some of the cheapest store brands, charge less than fifteen cents per diaper. Using them during the day, even if you switch to premiums at night, will neutralize the extra cost of premiums. Check out our store brand reviews here (and please contact me if you're interested in being a reviewer).

Use cloth. They're just plain cheaper. Cloth diapering start up costs are around $300, equivalent to around six months of disposables. The younger your baby is, the more you'll save, but it's never too late. It's not all or nothing, either. You can use cloth when you're at home and disposables when you go out. Or try cloth during the day and disposables at night. To find out more about getting started with clother diapering, try The Diaper Pin's How To page and forums.

What do you get or do with your Extra Care Bucks? Is is like money at CVS?

Sarah Schreffler said...

PS Target just raised their prices on their diapers so they are not as cheap as they used to be :(

Angie said...

They print out at the register, and you use them like coupons for your next purchases. They're even stackable.

joey's mom said...

Say you buy three jumbo packs of diapers at Walmart and have three $1.50 coupons, there new updated system will only let you use 1.

Angie said...

That's insane. When they realize how much business they're going to lose, they'll change it, I bet.

Allison said...

I know I won't shop at Walmart if that's the case!

I know I'll be driving to the nearest CVS this week (which is a 25 minute drive from me now. Boo!) to apply my $10 in ECB's to the Pampers deal. And I know it probably says one $5 in ECB per card, but since I won't get there often, I am going to then buy another pack of Pampers for less than $3 with ECB's and coupon. Diaper hikes are ridiculous! I say its worth the drive, considering I don't know how often Walgreens and Target will have decent sales. I don't really count Target's 'sale' this week a sale, considering all my Targets are selling the jumbo's at 10.49 per pack. perhaps the 9.99 is just a phantom price? And hopefully we'll see a good deal in the future?

I really should have rain checked that 2/$16 diaper deal Target had a few weeks ago. lol

We went the cloth diaper route, switching when our daughter was three months old. We bought 12 Fuzzi Bunz for $168 (they've gone up in price since then, now 12 are about $200), used them for about 20 months, then sold them for $100. We did supliment with disposibles when we travelled and sometimes for outings.

It saved us a bundle. Also, the Fuzzi Bunz can be used as training pants, much like pull-ups. We stopped using them when our daughter was only needing diapers at night.

Beth said...

Yep, the price hike is official at Target. My local store used to have Huggies Overnites Jumbos for $9.54, and as of last week they are up to $10.99. UGH! Hopefully there will still be some decent sales. In any case, thanks for your help, Angie, as always!

I came back from Walmart and have decided that I will no longer be a Walmart shopper.

Not only have they raised their prices on diapers along with many other items, but they have a new computer system which doesn't allow you to use coupons like you used to be able to.

I wanted to get 2 bags of jumbo size Huggies diapers at $9.97 which would cost $19.94. Then I had two coupons for $1.50 off, but they will only let you use one of the coupons because it is the same product. It also happened to me on some dog bones, so I know its not just Huggies products.

Needless to say, I save so much money with coupons that I will no longer be shopping there.

Huggies Super Mega diapers at Walmart used to be around $17.50, now they are $19.97, but for an extra dollar ($20.97) you can get the big box which has more diapers inside.

I also noticed last week that BRU has raised their prices on Pampers Cruisers to $38.99 a box.

I use cloth (at least while at home) and got them at Miracle Diapers. You only pay the cost of shipping the diapers to you. You use them and then returned them when you are done for someone else to use:

BRUs has hiked their Pampers big box. Normally $35.99 it is now $38.99. Once upon a time buying the big box there with the BRUs $5 off coupon paired with mannies was a great deal...ARGH. :(

Kristin said...

We track diaper deals and coupons for then at our blog... www.centsablebaby.blogspot.com

Great place to drop in to check each week.

I just told a new mom today to NEVER EVER pay full price for diapers and if you have the cash on hand, buy them in bulk (with a coupon of course). You'll save 10-20 cents PER diaper.

Anonymous said...

I highly recommend the BRU brand of diapers...Especially For You supremes. They run a coupon for $5 off every few months, and I stock up! My boys tee-tee a LOT and these keep them!

Rays Mom said...

Go Cloth!! It's not as bad as you think! We bought Fuzzi Bunz and they are great! (I don't swish anything in the toilet!)I also use Allen's Naturally laundry soap, in my HE washer, one box (about $25 per 5 lb box and has lasted the last 5 months, and I probably have 2 more months of it left)

Kate said...

It seems as though WalMart is almost doing something dishonest, seeing as how the coupons are from the manufacturer and are intended for us to use! I HATE that store anyways. As for the BRU diapers, I bought a box once and gave away the rest, because they kept leaking. Thanks for the sale updates Angie... thanks to the Target 7.50 price, the Walgreens clearance of Feel N Learns, and the recent CVS deal with the free wipes, I'm good to go for at least 5 more months!

NIKKI said...

If you have a local Winn Dixie near you try their store brand. We have been using them for a looong time during the day and they are the best one's I could find for my twins. (Yep double the diapers!

Kathy said...

If the diaper companies are reporting record breaking sales figures, why are they raising the price of diapers? Seems like they are just trying to make more money because they know you have no choice.

As far as Wal-Mart, that is horrible. I don't shop their often, but I won't be going there at all anymore. I hope they enjoy loosing so much business.

If you live near a large university, check to see if their uni stores (where the departments buy things like paper towels, ink cartridges, etc) is public. At Michigan State, there is a public counter, and the dipes there always seem much cheaper than in the stores.

amy. said...

Yay cloth! You can buy them used and resell them when your done to fund going up a size. Not only do you save some cash, you save all that landfill space as well!

Kristine said...

Sometimes I get tired of doing my cloth diaper laundry, but then I read posts like this and I remember why it's worth it! yep, the startup is pricey, but my little guy has been in larges for almost a year now. That means I've not bought anything for cloth diapering except detergent in the last year. Yeah!!!

Hey all!
I'm a big LUVS fan! Recently, I did a side-to-side comparison of LUVS with Pampers "baby dry" and with the exception of the outer material being different, the rest of the diaper was EXACTLY the same - same lining on the inside for leak protection, same exact stretch tabs, same elastic legs, etc.

LUVS and PAMPERS are both P&G products and LUVS are WAY LESS expensive than Pampers even without a coupon!

Usually Target offers an online coupon and then lately P&G has been partnering with Target for a $5 Target gift card when you purchase two boxes of LUVS or Pampers.

Anyway, I have tried many of the store brands and they just seem so bulky when full. I've never had leak issues with LUVS and am happy that they are one of the cheapest on the shelves.

yikes. As if they weren't expensive enough!

We've saved a ton using cloth diapers and they really aren't much more work. Thankfully, modern washing machines are really effective. :)

We've used 'sposies on occasion too. The first week home from the hospital I used the Pampers they give you in the hossy. Then we went through a pack in each size that were shower gifts. The first time I've actually purchased any was for a plane ride when he was about a year old. I didn't want to take cloth through security and all that.

Erin83 said...

Thanks for the tip Nancy, I use Pampers Baby Dry...going to give the Luvs a try.

Laura M. said...

I use BumGenius cloth diapers and LOVE them! They are adjustable so one diaper fits a baby from 5-35 lbs. There is no soaking or swishing and one run through the washer gets them perfectly clean. I would highly recommend them to anyone. Cloth diapers are so much easier than people think and I never have to run to the store to stock up.

Anonymous said...

Cloth is not cheaper unless you get the diapers for free. Cloth diapers will cost an average of $16 a month just to wash. For the last ten months I have averaged $20 a month on disposable diapers. Combine sales, coupons, and the wonderful $5 off $20 Proctor and Gamble deal. I buy several months' worth of diapers at once.

Anonymous said...

i'm so glad i stocked up on the luvs diapers at target last week. and with their sale, and coupon, they're coming up way cheaper than their own Target brand diapers!

Aaron, Julie, and Trey said...

To Anonymous 12:57:

I don't know where you got your figures from, but I have used cloth diapers on both my children, and only spend $5/month to wash and dry them--that's including energy, water, detergent, and even estimates of washer/dryer depreciation!

Not to mention they can be the same as "free" if you use them on more than one child and/or resell them when you are done. I'm so glad that I don't have to buy disposables, but cloth is great for more reasons than financial, though, as stated previously.

Anonymous said...

I like Luvs too, and also Berkley and Jensen, the store brand at BJs (a warehouse store in the northeast).

But I'm just glad it's about time to potty-train and quit using diapers entirely. That'll show those greedy paper companies! :-)

Bridget said...

I would have really liked to use cloth, however, I don't have a washer/dryer in my home so I would have to go out to a laundromat to wash them. Not worth it. Especially since the cheapest one around here would cost me $2.00 for a load (to wash and dry).
All in all, I think I'm switching to Luvs. I loaded up last week at the Target sale so we're set for a while. AND got gift cards to boot! Yay! I love a bargain!

My Boaz's Ruth said...

bridget: It costs me $2.25 a load to wash and dry. So I understand. It's one thing keeping me from trying cloth.

Amy said...

These are great tips, Angie, as always! I would also encourage people to really explore cloth and see how much it has changed. It isn't diaper pins and stinking pails anymore :) Even if you can try doing it part time, there is a savings.

Also cloth diapering doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing either...kind of like nursing. You can supplement with the cloth diapers when times are more lean :)

Thanks for all your great info!!

The last time I went to WalMart they would not except internet coupons...so I won't be going back there very soon! With this diaper price hike across the board I decided to email WalMart corporate...I'll post when they reply. Corrie126@hotmail.com

I'm also a Luvs fan, but I love BRU's store brand even more!!!

To me it's far and away the best - I even recommend the supreme version for overnights. It's on par with the Huggies Overnights - but it's great for those sensitive tushies. The supreme also has a very soft, almost fabric-like, stretch tab on either side for a better fit which is great for those babies on the move!

I've been using these since the great black friday sale ($10/box) and we've never had a leakage problem, not a single diaper rash since then, and they withstand my daughter's attempts to rip them off!

Currently Babies R Us has the value packs (100ct - 196ct) on sale at 2 boxes for $30, or $15 each (must buy 2 to get the discount). Each box is regularly $22.49-$24.49. For a box of size 4 supremes that is $0.15/diaper, for a box of size 4 regular that is less than $0.12/diaper. (100ct & 126ct)

I grabbed 4 boxes yesterday and will be grabbing a bunch more on Friday. I've been watching for a sale on these, and this is the first one they've had since Black Friday.

On a side note - for those that want to try cloth, but are scared to go full force, check out GDIAPERS. I used them with my daughter for a while - it's a cloth cover with a biodegradeable insert that you can either flush, trash, or use for compost. I ended up getting rid of the inserts and making my own out of flannel (daughter gets diaper rashes easily) and it worked great!

I believe their website is www.gdiapers.com

Woo. sorry. Novel. I even shortened this up dramatically, sorry if it's too long.

Laura said...

I didn't read all the comments to see if anyone mentioned it, but I wold encourage folks to try out ALDI store brand diapers (and Aldi in general) They are far superior to any other store brand and extremely reasonable. Downsides - limited size availability (part of Aldi's strategy to keep prices low by stocking only high volume items) and small package sizes. Pluses - price and quality.

Rebecca said...

In two years of cloth diapering, I've spent under $200, including washing and drying costs, so I definitely agree with everyone who has recommended switching to cloth diapers to save money. At http://www.greenbabyguide.com, I wrote a cost-comparison article showing how I was able to save so much.

It's not true, as one poster suggested, that using cloth won't save money unless you get the supplies for free. I do sympathize with those who must use coin-operated washers and dryers--you may indeed be better off with another method if you're paying so much with each load. But if you have your own washer and dryer, you should be able to see some big savings!

Sarah Schreffler said...

cocoj: Walmart is not responsible for the diaper price hike. The diaper companies raised their prices.

My Boaz's Ruth said...

rebecca: Actually Amy Daczyn did a price check between cloth diapers and disposables and found out that in some parts of the country the cloth diapers were equivalently expensive to the prices you can find for disposables (not retail of the most expensive disposable) when you took into account electricity, water, etc. It all depends on where you live and what your rates are. (This being, of course, back when both electricity and the price of diapers was cheaper because it has been a while since she was publishing)

This is why people need to make their individual decisions for themselves. I do think most people realize cloth diapers are a choice.

I would really like to give the cloth diaper thing a go.... I have a 10 month old- which have you had more success with- Bumgenuis or Fuzzi bunz and where do you find the best pricing?? Thanks!

but you can also get them at http://www.fuzzibunzstore.com/store/home.php

If you want to try cloth diapering but are hesitant, you can go to www.jillianscloset.com adn they have a program where for a $10 trial you can try several kinds of diapers and keep the ones you like or send them all back. She also sells gently used and seconds at a discounted price if you find something you like.

I love cloth diapering. We have asked for diapers for gifts and handmedowns. We use the sink/end of the diaper/washcloths as wipes at home, which saves money too. Also, they blow out a lot less than the cheapo disposibles.

I have a 20lb, tall 8 month old, and out of the 1 size diapers I've used, I like the Happy Heinys. There is more room to grow into than the Bum Genius, and the velcro is more generous, comfortable, and harder for baby to get off.

Anonymous said...

There are many estimates of cloth diapers costing as much as $16 a month to wash. There are other reasons to choose cloth besides cost, but for people who are good at bargain shopping, cost is probably not a big reason.

Hey, heads up, Kroger has Pampers on sale this week (I think until Tuesday) for 8.99 for the jumbo. I guess they haven't caught up with the diaper hike yet.

Angie said...

I checked the shelves at one of our Kroger stores here in the Southeast. Doesn't seem like they've raised their prices yet on premiums or on their store brands (which are still $6.99 per jumbo).

Our Target's store brand diapers were still $5.74 per jumbo as well.

Go to greenmountainsdiapers.com to view a great site about cloth diapers. They are all about cotton which is natural. There are pictures galore of every product.

When I decided to switch to cloth I first ordered FuzziBunz because they would fit both my 21 month old and my newborn. I also liked the idea that they were a diaper and cover in one. They come with trial period and if you don't like them you can return after 2 weeks. Which is what I did.

First off they were very bulkey, the whole stuffing the insert in the pocket was annoying. But the worrst part was they still smelled after being washed.

I ended uop getting a variety of diapers. A wonderful diaper for breastfed babies is kissaluves(no blowouts!) Also just plain prefolds work great, are easy to use and super cheap. The best cover are dappi(just google them). I could go on forever...
e-mail me if you have any questions
smsarah0228@yahoo.com

Cloth is great...save money...nice for the environment...no chemicals in babies skin:)

How lucky angie! The new Target around here never had the diapers at $5.74 but our local holdout changed over as of the beginning of February. For fractions of a penny difference, I must say that Huggies/Luvs look much more attractive.

I'm stretching my diaper supply a little by sitting my baby on a Baby Bjorn tiny potty ($10) when I go to the bathroom. She enjoys sitting there playing with a roll of toilet paper and will sometimes urinate into the potty.

nevaehsmommy said...

I used sposies with my daughter until she was around a year old. I bought my diapers off of 1800diapers.com now diapers.com

When she was a year I started having her be "my potty partner" she would sit on the potty when I did. Sometimes she urinated. I would give her a choclate chip when she pee'd. Soon she got the idea. She was potty trained completyly by 18 months old.

Around a year I started cloth diapering as well. She hated being wet. I did not buy the super fancy diapers that cost and arm and a leg. I bought prefolds from another mom online. I bought 24 prefolds for $20.00. I bought some diaper covers online for cheap. I think I spent no more then $40.00 altogether. Look at diaperswappers.com or diaperpin.com or craigslist.org for good deals.

I used the cloth during the day and sposies at night. I dont know how much money I saved but between her potty training early and not having to buy diapers every week I saved up enough to buy her a nice car seat.

For those frustrated with WalMart's coupon issue, just a suggestion, separate your order. Then you can use both coupons and maybe they will get so frustrated when people do this that they will switch back!

It's worth a try.

softbumsmama said...

Take another look at cloth diapers. Just do a simple search on google for "cloth diapers" and you will see the difference of the diapers today, compared to 10 yrs ago or so. You can see why so many people are switching to cloth! They are cool!

There is no way you can only spend $20/mo on disposables. I don't care how many coupons you use, and sales you get to, disposable diapers aren't free, and unless you are someone who only changes your poor baby 5 times a day, you go through an average of 10 changes a day, 300/month, and that comes to an average of between $45-$120/mo for disposable diapers! Do the math! Also, someone obviously never actually read the links that were posted about how much cloth diapers cost per month to wash, or you would have realized that all those sites said it was about $3-$6/mo to wash cloth diapers!!!!!

I suppose it's cheaper to wear paper clothes and toss them after just one use too huh? LOL! just kidding!

Do the math if you don't believe. Add up a whole day's worth of disposable diapers used(if you can stand the smell, lol) and then count them. I bet you use a lot more than you think you are using!!!! It's hard to keep track being so busy as a mama!!

Disposable diapers can cost up to $3500/baby or more, cloth.....get ready for this....between $100-$300/baby!!!!

If anyone knows someone who works in a hospital I tend to find they have the cheapest price diapers. My mother-in-law gets us size 1 pampers, 240 count for $20. I'll let you know as my daughter gets bigger what the price is
