Sometimes you need to provide a little (free) diversion for a few minutes so you can finish whatever it is you were trying to finish before it became extremely difficult for you to do so. Here are three sites that will help you detach any toddler or preschooler from your leg:
Sesame Street Videos. New! Hundreds of clips from Sesame Street to play right in your browser. Searchable. If your kid is into Barney, you can find Barney videos here and a whole bunch more from PBS Kids Sprout here.
BookPALS Storyline Online. (Thanks to Heather for the tip). Actors like the guy who played the Hobbit read favorite kids' stories like Stellaluna. Downloadable activity guides help slightly older kids find out more and explore related books.
Sesame Street's Peek-a-Boo game is great for toddlers because they don't need to use a mouse. This one really gets my son giggling. Elmo et al. pop out from behind various objects when you press a button on the keyboard.
And here's a great site to explore with your child: Lookybook. Read full-length kids books online. Register and you can save them to your bookshelf for easy access later.
What are your favorite toddler-friendly sites?

nationalgeographic.com is great. They have a kids section where they have short videos of all different animals, and my toddler likes to pick out the animals she wants to see "in action."
By far our almost 3 year old's favorite site is www.starfall.com She loves it! We're still working on the letters of the alphabet, but the site goes all the way through teaching a child to read.
Thank you. I can't wait to take a look at these sites. Both my girls, 3 and 18 mos. seem charmed by the computer sometimes!

As with Marybeth, we love starfall.com at our house. I used it when I taught first grade, but my son loves it. He "navigates" by himself quite a bit and explores the sight on his own. We have fun doing it together, too!
My son likes kneebouncers.com and (pre-watched and approved) Disney and Sesame Street short cartoon on you-tube.
fisherprice.com has some fun online games for toddlers. Kneebouncers.com is great too!
There are a ton of games, stories, etc. at Nickjr.com as well. My kids love the Dora, Blue's and Max & Ruby games especially. You may have to download shockwave for some of the items, but not everything.
My five year old loves pbskids.org and has been playing on it since he was two. But then we're a pbs sorta family. :)
www.bigideafun.com has a lot of coloring pages and games, though the games are more geared toward the slightly older child.
For our family, we have a variety that all 3 like. They are:
www.starfall.com (Alphabet and learning to read)
www.pbskids.org (Barney, Curious George, Dragon Tales, etc.)
www.pbskidssprout.com (PBS Kids specialty site/channel)
www.noggin.com (Nick Jr.'s specialty site/channel)
www.nickjr.com (Dora, Blue's Clues, etc.)
www.playhousedisney.com (Wiggles/JoJo's Circus, etc.)
www.agkidzone.com (Care Bears/Strawberry Shortcake)
www.hasbro.com/mylittlepony/ (My Little Pony)
They are all good and have free, appropriate activities for little ones.

Also, www.sesameworkshop.org (Sesame Street games/activities)

Thanks for all the recommendations. My little one is only 9 month, but he is fascinated by the keyboard already. These websites are great for kids.
I have used many of these sites, but you all introduced me to some new ones too. Several years ago, I had a first grade foster daughter, and I wanted her to have a "portal" to what I considered safe and somewhat educational internet sites, so I created a page off my homepage (I am a teacher). We found that this was great at school as well for many of our students with special needs who needed some remedial practice, and many families enjoyed it at home as well. Now, I have a one year old, and I liked so many of these sites that I reformatted it a little and added them to this part of my page and I may start using it with her too. Anyways, if you would like to use my website as an "internet portal" for your children, here is the link http://www.staff.fcps.net/anoah/firstgrade.htm. I have almost all the links people mentioned on there somewhere. Some people might also enjoy some of the links on the e-text website (on the menu on the left hand side of the page).
I ran into some difficulties while reformatting this page, and the Jeopardy links are not currently working; I hope to have them back up and running in the next few days. I think I fixed all the other glitches- please use the link on my page to email me if you have difficulties with anything else or if a picture doesn't match a link (this was the major problem I had):) I hope you enjoy it. (BTW, starfall and storybook online are long-time favorites of mine as well)
I liked the videos at http://video.sesameworkshop.org/ My 4 year old son is definitely gonna love it.

Have you guys checked out http://www.biguniverse.com/? It's an awesome site!
Wow, lots of new sites for me to explore. I think my 3-yr. old might start kicking me off the computer! Thanks, Angie!
