Parents and pediatricians alike love comfy, supportive Stride Rite shoes. It's Stride Rite prices that parents aren't so fond of. Here are a few Stride Rite shopping secrets that will save you big. See the bottom of the post for the best Stride Rite deals I'm seeing right now.
Shop sales end of season clearance at Stride Rite stores and StrideRite.com.
- End of season sales bring deep discounts. Last January's end-of-season clearance at Stride Rite even included a 2/$30 promo. The summer EOS sales have already begun!
- At the Stride Rite store? The Queen of Free suggests asking sales people where to find what's on sale. They'll point you to the best deals and save you time. Store locator.
- Stride Rite holds semi annual sales in April and October. Expect to see coupons for about 20% off then.
- Late July brings the Stride Rite BOGO 50% off sale. In store only.
- Mercedes from Common Sense with Money likes to hit the Stride Rite outlet store. Find one here.
- To find coupons for Stride Rite, just do a quick Internet search for "Stride Rite coupon." Any valid coupons should turn up in the results.
- Stride Rite's spring coupon, which appeared at the end of April, allowed shoppers to take 20% off their purchase.
- Stride Rite also issued a Friends and Family in-store coupon during the second week in May which was good for 20% off regularly priced merch and 10% off sale items.
- Want to be in on the coupon and sale loop? Stride Rite itself suggested (via Twitter) signing up with Stride Rite's mailing list.
- Find Stride Rites on clearance at Amazon (August and January). In many cases you'll get free shipping with orders of $25 or more. Bring your best bargain-hunting skills to find a steal in your child's size.
- Save up to 30% on Stride Rite during the monthly Saturday Sales at Shoes.com (there should be one coming up this Saturday). Expect the best deals in early August. Last August we saw a big Shoes.com 60% to 70% off clearance on Stride Rite infants shoes.
- Check 6pm.com, where you'll find Stride Rites for $25 to $30. You'll pay $6.95 flat rate shipping, so you'll save more if you buy more than one pair at a time.
- New England blogger Bargain Becky has found random styles and sizes for less than $10 at Marshall's.
Consider less expensive Stride Rite-made shoes.- Kohl's Munchkin shoes are made by Stride Rite (left). They run about $35, and you can find them on sale for $20.
- Parents love Payless Shoe Source's SmartFit shoes and compare them favorably with Stride Rite. Payless and Stride Rite share the same parent company (are SmartFit made by Stride Rite? I don't know).
Check consignment stores and sales, Craigslist, etc., especially for younger kids, who don't wear out their shoes before they outgrow them. You may even luck out and find some for free on Freepeats or Freecycle.
Try ebay. I'm seeing some new-in-box toddler Stride Rites on eBay right now for $14.99. Just make sure shipping and handling charges don't blow the deal.

I've seen Stride Rite's "Dylan" style and a few others at Ross stores in Portland, OR (Clackamas and Gateway) for $13.99 each... as of today there was still a variety of sizes left.
They also send out buy one get one 50% off at times.
I have seen Stride Rite at Marshall's and Ross. Also, there are Stride Rite outlet stores. For the price of one pair at the "regular" store, I was able to buy two.
They sell a few styles of Stride Rite shoes at JcPenney's and they are about $10 less than the Stride Rite store. I bought my son tennis shoes on sale at JCPenney's for $25 and they are the same as $40 ones at Stride Rite.
Not only do the Stride Rite outlets have good prices, but they have huge selection. I drive 2 hrs every spring to stock up on sandals for my kids.
Wow, I needed this article about two weeks ago. With shipping, I paid $36 for one pair of XW sandals for our daughter! I will not buy her cheap shoes, but that was crazy. Thanks for the tips and deals. I'll definitely be on the lookout. Please post the sales if you find some good ones. Thanks!!
We live near a stride rite outlet and I try to not pay more than $15 for sneakers. I have been pretty successful with this one even with a boy! (There seem to be 3x more girl shoes than boys). I have also had luck at Marshalls paying around $17 for sneaker/boots. They even had the "Wide" that my son needed. They go through shoes so fast, I hate paying a fortune for good shoes
Question for those of you that shop at the outlet- Do they measure your child's foot for you? I think I'm just going to start driving the 45 minutes to our outlets in Lancaster and get her shoes there. Does anyone know if they carry XW? I may have to give them a call and check. Thanks!!
I have buy shoes for my boys at S.R. -- they both wear wide and I never have a problem finding a pair they like in their size. And yes, they measure their feet for you. They also have a B.O.G.O. half-off sale at some point during the year. I have been able to find a couple pair of S.R. for my 15-month old daughter at our second-hand store. They still look brand new and I got them for $5.50!
I always buy Stride Rites from one of the two outlets in the Houston area (Katy Mills and 290 Outlets). I never pay more than 23.00 for a pair. I refuse to buy them from the store.
Hilary-don't feel so bad...my four year old has had XW feet until just a few months ago and every time we buy shoes it is about 40 dollars a pop at Stride Rite. There is really nowhere else to buy XW shoes...the only other shoes I have found that fit him were Crocs. Other than getting them on sale out of season or using a coupon you are going to pay for XW shoes.
Keep checking with Ross - bought a great pair of shoes for my toddler for $12.99.
The regular Stride Rite stores usually have a BOGO 1/2 off in late July/early August. The outlets generally mark a lot down to $19.99 around this same time. I live near an outlet so I go in often to check the clearance rack since I am buying for triplets and refuse to pay over $15 for a pair of shoes. The staff knows me and is great about checking in the back for sizes and letting me know when sales might be coming up. Ijust scored a pair of sneakers for $10 yesterday. Marshall's used to carry a lot of SR but not so much lately. However, when they do have them, they tend to have a lot of the W and XW sizes which my boys need.

A good online source for Stride Rites is www.kidsurplus.com. And the styles are fairly current. I've had good luck getting later sizes of shoes we had purchased in store (so we knew the width and style fit him).

I left them out of this article, however, because of the negative reader feedback I've received regarding their customer service.
Another thing I've done is conservatively buy ahead for my toddler. I know that sounds crazy but at his age (just 2), he doesn't tell me and/or doesn't care if his shoes are the right size. So, if the clearance section has the next size up shoe (I keep the same width he is) I grab them up too. I dno't buy WAY ahead but well, if he's in an 8 now, he's gonna be in an 8.5 soon.

I used to work at Stride Rite years ago and one thing we always told parents was not to buy used shoes. I think this is probably okay if the child is not walking yet, but once they start walking the shoe molds to their foot...I dunno, I know I hate wearing other people's shoes...they just never feel right.
All those years working there and I didn't have kids and my discount was wasted...now I have twins so I will be looking for deals! Thanks :)
I have never gotten full use out of shoes bought ahead of time. I can stock up on everything else, but not shoes. I always have them for the wrong season.
MA stores will have buy 1 get 50% off starting 7/23/09. Also they have a survey going where if you complete survey after in store purchase you can get anything between 5% and 20% off.
I just called up the Stride Rite outlet in MA and asked when they would be having their back to school sale. The guy said it would start July 28th and run through most of August.
Do the outlet stores carry XW width normally? Thanks so much...it's a 2 hour drive away that I hate to waste if not :)
